that will take any deal that obama will give them because they are scared to death. >> i think the republicans will have a much stronger hand, assuming we go over the cliff, assuming obama stays very hard line and offers only humiliating conditions, the republicans resistor do nothing, then we go over the cliff, then i think you are right. the republicans have a pretty strong hand because obama then has to worry about the debt ceiling. now with he says that's a game i won't play. he has to play. he's the president. he's responsible for the full faith and credit of the united states. and he's got republicans in charge of the house. that's the will of the people. that's the result of an election. and they have a man date -- mandate as much as he does. he may not like it, but he has to. that's are the republicans i think has the stronger hand. if you don't cave now and you hang on, the republicans will be in a position in the next month or two, i think we will really hit the wall on the debt ceiling probably the end of february, beginning of march, and that's when i think they will have the upper

"outfront" we have the view from both sides of the aisle. democrat from arizona and republican from wisconsin. earlier, i spoke to the arizona congressman and asked him what he would support a scaled down deal that the president pushed for on friday. >> yeah, i would. i think that's realistic. i think we're at a point after, after the implosion by boehner and the party not to be able to come to an agreement with president obama. that we're talk

time to avert the fiscal cliff before the new year. president obama will head back to washington tonight. danielle leigh is on capitol hill. good morning. does a deal still look doable? >> good morning. there is hope for a deal but confidence in that grand bargain reform has all but disappeared. americans are already taking a good hard look at their wallets as confidence the avoidance of the fiscal cliff diminishes. >> there is hope a deal will be cut. >> reporter: if congress doesn't oaks spire tax cuts in day, middle income earners will owe $2,000 extra a year. consumers are predicted to cut back in automotive, apparel and entertainment. >> once people decide to cut back on that, the effect is dramatic. >> reporter: the national retail federation says retailers support 1 in 4 american jobs and if the downward trend intensify, those jobs would be at risk. >> if retailers stop creating job, the economy as a whole will stop creating jobs. >> reporter: the wait is e excruciating. president obama visited hawaii after talks on capitol hill. they were $200 billion apart on a deal. >>

could be working out a deal on the fiscal cliff impasse, they're not there. president obama and the first family are in hawaii for the holidays and lawmakers have gone home. let's check in with cnn's emily schmidt in washington, not hawaii. emily, good morning. when will we see everyone back in washington to try to work out a deal? >> randi, that's a good question. everyone has left town. they did so yesterday. everyone is saying they'll be back again after christmas. if there are any negotiations that happen, it will be at least a few days that they would have to be done long distance. and there is a lot of work, it seems, still to be done. we've heard from president obama and house speaker john boehner over the past few hours. and it sounds publicly as if they are still quite far apart. take a listen. >> every member of congress believes that. every democrat, every republican. so there is absolutely no reason, none, not to protect these americans from a tax hike. and at the very least let's agree right now on what we already agree on. let's get that done. >> the president

stocking. higher taxes, lawmakers and president obama have left washington for christmas with no deal on tax hikes and spending cuts set to go in effect after the first of the year. brianna keilar is live in hawaii where the president is spending the christmas holiday. brianna, the president maybe a little too optimistic that a deal can be reached? aloha, by the way. >> he did say last night that he is a hopeless optimist that something can get done, but what we know, it's not going to be that big package, obviously of deficit reduction as well as dealing with these tax hikes that are set to kick in. that's not what's going to be happening, instead, he's pressing for something smaller just to a deal with stopping those tax hikes from kicking in for americans making $250,000 per year or less. and also trying to make sure that unemployment benefits are extended. listen to what president obama said last night and also listen to what some of the house republican resistance from speaker boehner to his sort of short-term plan here. >> in the next few days, i've asked leaders of congress to

about pushing back on this for the good of the country? if no deal is struck this year, president obama, what does he have? well, he's got the inauguration coming up. a big platform. he's got the state of the union address coming up. a big platform. he is going to have a better chance to have the american people on his side. president obama urged all members of congress to get some perspective over the holiday weekend on this. >> everybody can cool off. everybody can drink some eggnog, have some christmas cookies, sing some christmas carols, enjoy the company of loved ones, and then i'd ask every member of congress while they're back home to think about that. think about the obligations we have to the people who sent us here. think about the hardship that so many americans will endure if congress does nothing at all. >> that is a crucial point right there, folks. here is president obama. not saying, you know, boehner can't get his caucus together. i got my folks together. we're ready to rock 'n roll. we've got a deal right on the table for the american people. it's boehner, he is the pr

.c. weather in the app store. >>> negotiations are underway to reach a deal. president obama and congressional leaders just wrapped up a meeting at the white house. we stand right now at three days and counting until that new year's deadline when taxes would go up for all u.s. taxpayers and steep spending cuts would kick in across the board. nicole collins has the latest. >> reporter: john boehner back in washington immediately heading to the white house, which brought the president and congressional leaders together the first time since november, but it's unclear if it brought the country closer to avoiding the fiscal cliff. >> when the president calls congressional leaders to the white house, it's all political theatre or they have a deal. not that it's all political theatre. >> this is not for show but a last-ditch effort by the president to bring congressional leader together to try to get a small package at least, a small deal together before the new year. >> reporter: the president called the meeting as lawmakers pointed fingers in this high- stakes game of chicken. >> the republicans wh

. that is the strategy right now. president obama will be working with what ma jority leader reid trying to get something through. the president wanted a big deal given the time constraints and only six days left, he conceded to a big deal is probably not possible. the goal now is just to get a gap measure to prevent the steep tax hikes from kicking into effect and the deep spending cuts. right now that is the large goal. i can tell you that competence in lawmakers is dwindling according to the latest poll. 50% of americans believe that lawmakers will be able to prevent going-over the fiscal cliff. that is a drop from seven points from december 16th. consumer confidence in the lawmaker'sability to get something done. if we go over the cliff, it could have ramifications including leading the country back into a recession. >> can you tell me or do we know whether president obama spent any time on the phone with mitch mcconnell or john boehner or the republican leaders? that's a good question and has not happened during this holiday vacation. talks between the main players here are largely stalled. there ha

summer connish in for chris matthews. president obama calls for congress to act on a scaled down deal that would spare the middle class on tax hikes from the first of the year. he spoke with john boehner tonight but is grand bargain still possible when everybody is leaving town. then in the weeks since the shooting massacre in a town that left hand 20 children and six educators dead, we've been hearing for plenty calling for new gun control laws but little from the nra until now. in a bizarre meeting, the head of the nra said the solution to gun vie lerchs in this country is simple. more guns. armed officers, in fact, in every school. it's the same line we've heard from nra, but has the country's relationship with guns fundamentally changed since newtown? and what we saw is yet another symptom of a real problem for the gop. they don't believe in compromise and they've lurched too far to the right. >>> plus replacing hillary clinton, john kerry gets the job he's waited for his whole life. president obama tapped john kerry as the next secretary of state. >>> and let me finish with the n

us about this new fiscal cliff deal that president obama has sent over to senator leaders? >> well, the power of social media to get the word out. gop sources say in the conversation with the president, he indicated that he does have a bill he would like to bring forward to the hill today. they have not seen that. it would be a package to deal with averting the fiscal cliff. we can infer from that with what the president said before he went to the family vacation in hawaii that he wanted something that would be scaled down, not a massive grand bargain that would protect the current tax rate for people who earned less than $250,000 a year or perhaps a different figure if they reached that. but trying to protect the middle class. so officials here haven't seen it yet, but this is kind of today's volley in what has been this ongoing battle. house speaker john boehner has been saying the president must act and it appears the president is prepared to do that with another offer. and senate democrats would presumably be right on board with that. hopefully we will get details sometime this

that congress is facing a hard deadline while at the same time, blaming each other for not having a deal in place by now. president obama cut short his holiday vacation and returned to the white house to work on a deal to avoid the "fiscal cliff." before flying home from hawaii, the president called congressional leaders nancy pelosi, john boehner, mitch mcconnell and harry reid to reach agreements before tax hikes and spending cuts kick in january 1. >> we have been asking the president and the democrats to work with us on a bipartisan agreement for months. >> i don't know time wise how it can happen now. >> reporter: the senate majority leader wants house republicans to return from their vacations to approve a democratic senate plan that extends tax cuts for families making less than $250,000 a year. >> that's the only option that is viable escape route. >> reporter: but republican leaders say it's up to democrats who control the senate and white house to avert the "fiscal cliff." >> republicans aren't about to write a blank check for anything senate democrats put forward just because

the potential deal they had been working on with president obama. >> republican strategist, frank luntz has been talking with voters, what is the chance you see this becomes the new compromise? >> i'm not sure if hooert side is watching very closely. we did a survey and we got two interesting questions. one that's very tough on republicans. we asked the american people who is the gop fighting for and representing, the number one answer, the rich the number two answer, big business, well back is number three hard-working taxpayers. by them fighting this on the most wealthy americans, they say once again the gop is standing up for the rich what the democrats don't understand is that the hostility towards how much washington end spends that this whole discussion of the last six weeks has been about raising taxes on the wealthy. >> let's say we get a deal and it's short-term spending cuts and people don't have someone to blame because we don't go over the cliff, but the markets don't like it the world economy doesn't like it and ultimately our currency becomes in jeopardy

american power, the obama white house, and "the new new deal," the hidden story of change in the obama era with bob woodward's the price of politics. i want to ask both of you, did bob woodward's most recent book get the attention most of his books get? >> my feeling is it has got initial attention, it was crowded out by the nature of the news cycle, at least to my mind, and there wasn't that many other ones that emerged after those initial one or two, the book lost some of its momentum but i'm sure bob will have an equally substantive answer on this front too. >> a standard what you are comparing it to, it was not his most commercially successful book. sera touchdown two things, the news cycle has heated up, the other factor was the topic was about the negotiations over the budget, the debt is not exactly an exciting topic for a lot of people. as opposed to his books on maneuvering in the bush white house which would have more interest. >> one thing i want to bring up tangential to these particular books but an emerging trend we saw in 2012, a lot of current events, topics are not just th

on the edge of a fiscal cliff after a breakdown in talks on reaching a deal. president obama and lawmakers have left town taking a few days off for their christmas health. then it's back to the drawing bord and with budgeted talks in disarray, president obama and speaker john boehner are searching for a way to avoid tumbling over. >> we move forward together or we don't move forward at all. so, as we leave town for a few days to be with our families through the holidays. i hope it gives some perspective. >> we propose plans that democrats used to support but now they won't. i don't want taxes to go up. republicans don't want taxes to go up. but we only run the house, democrats continue to run washington. >> gregg: national correspondent steve centanni joins us live from washington. >> reporter: d.c. may be some shutting down for christmas but the clock hasn't stopped and fiscal cliff is closer than ever. no deal was reached this week to keep taxes from going up. joan boehner pulled plug on the plan "b" and he says it is now up to the president and g.o.p. is continuing to hammer away at pre

. congressional leaders will talk with president obama trying to avert the "fiscal cliff." ed payne tells us they only have four days. >>> reporter: in what's seen as a last-minute attempt to reach a deal, president obama meets at the white house with senate majority leader harry reid, house minority leader nancy pelosi, senate minority leader mitch mcconnell and house speaker john boehner. they have only four days to reach an agreement or the u.s. economy will go off the so- called "fiscal cliff." that's when automatic spending increases and cuts would take effect. reaching a deal won't be easy because both sides are involved in a high stakes political blame game. >> we are here in washington working while the members of the house of representatives are out watching movies and watching the kids play soccer and basketball and doing all kinds of things. they should be here. >> i told the president we would be happy to look at wah he proposes but the truth is we are coming up against a hard deadline and as i said this is a conversation we should have had months ago. >> reporter: democrats want

stories from the west coast that i have to get for you. barack obama is not relistically dealing with nuclear power. this has been a political football for years ever since the reagan administration. he didn't want the nuclear waste plant built out in the east, tom foley didn't want it built in the west, some texas congressman didn't want it in his state, so that's how nevada got stuck with it. it's been studies, however, this land, yucca mountain's been studied for about 25 years, and the facility's already built, and it cost about $13.5 billion. it is safer to store nuclear waste in one central location in the middle of nowhere -- apologies to north nevada -- tho scatter it around the country which is what our current policy is. our current policy is when the nuclear power plant is done with the fuel, you put it into a fuel pool or a dry casket and sit it on site. that is less safe than just taking it all in and sticking it underneath a mountain in nevada. however, the chair, gregory crash coe -- originally appointed by jrnlg w. bush and elevated to chairman by barack obama and

have been a lot better off taking the deal that boehner was negotiating with president obama way back when. it was a better deal all the way around. they missed that moment. but i think the real thing is who pays the price. the people who are going to pay the price are the americans, the middle class. this is crazy. it's nuts to be putting us through this. >> all of the focus on tax cuts. but the revenue from increasing the taxes on the wealthy will barely make a debt in the deficit to say nothing of the trillions in debt we're talking about. is this just a symbolic fight this the president is determined to win off his election? >> it's not symbolic. there will be money raised if the taxes are left to expire. but let me just bring up a point. no democrat and certainly not this president has said there should be no spending cuts. on the contrary this president has put on the table an extraordinary amount of spending cuts to the chagrin of many democrats i might add. are they to the extent the grand bargain was? no, of course not. the president is in a much stronger political position r

, the president met with congressional leaders this afternoon and declared he was modestly optimistic about a deal on taxes. speaking in the white house briefing room, president obama condemned congress for failing to resolve its differences in any normal way. >> christin, let's take a listen to what the president said about the up or down vote about what he expects to emerge from the senate. >> i just had a good and constructive discussion here at the white house with senate and house leadership about how to prevent this tax hike on the middle class. i'm optimistic. if an agreement isn't reached in time, between senate store reid and senator mcconnell, then i will urge senator reid to bring to the floor a basic package for an up or down vote. i believe such a proposal could pass with bipartisan majorities. >> this up or down vote seems to be the big news of the day. isn't this what the white house wanted all along? >> well, it is. it's president's obama's way of sayi ining vote on his basic proposal. it would extend in employment insurance ben filt fits and deal with unemployment insurance cuts.

president obama and house speaker john boehner it may be time for the upper chamber to craft a deal. here is lindsey graham's suggestion on "meet the press" this morning. >> any hope must start in the senate. not one democrat would support the idea to protect 99%. boehner's plan b i thought made sense. to my republican colleagues the ronald reagan model is if you get 80% of what you want that is a good day. >> senate minority leader mitch mcconnell may be key to an agreement. texas senator tells the washington post, quote, will he pull a rabbit out of his hat? i don't know. i don't know. i would be grateful if he comes up with a way out of this other than going off the cliff." joining us is jamie harrison and republican strategist chip who is campaign manager of mike huckabee's president campaign. chip, let's start with you. are mitch mcconnell and senate republicans the last hope for getting a deal done? >> this close to christmas i will say yes. the democratics can't do it alone. republicans can't do it alone. i think mitch mcconnell has been eerily quiet which makes me believe he is pr

. yesterday the obama administration announced that the president would cut short his hawaiian holiday to make one more attempt to work out a deal to overt the so-called fiscal cliff. in unison, his pals in the news media repeated this white house talking point. >> president obama cutting short his vacation in hawaii, heading back now to washington. that will happen tonight to work on the fiscal cliff deal. >> the looming fiscal cliff is forcing president obama to cut short his christmas vacation. >> president obama is cutting short his christmas vacation. he is leaving hawaii tonight so that he can be back in washington when congress reconvenes tomorrow. >> laura: so we should believe that by leaving his island enclave that the president was making some big sacrifice for the country? i'm thinking washington, crossing the delaware on a bitter christmas night 1776 before going on to defeat the british in two major battles, that's sacrifice. i, for one, never understood how in good conscious any of these politicians would think about leaving town with so much riding on this cliff hanger? shouldn

the president. so mitch mcconnell, speaker john boehner, they have to deal with the fact that president obama was reelected to raise taxes on the top 2% and speaker boehner and the republicans can't get their hands around their caucus, then the blame is on them. >> jarret, what do you think about all of this? you deal with the policy. you deal with the numbers. there has been some offers from the president, even to the chagrin of hi base. how do you make where we are? >> well, listening to the three of you and your introduction, i'm just struck a real low point in american politics over a period when there's been pretty good kovcompetition for the low of the low points. i'm also really kind of moved by the really political malpractice going on. we have an economic recovery on going. >> by the way, you don't really hear people talking about the unemployment rate. you're working to build on the momentum of this recovery. help them prove it so american households can get ahead on their own. through working hard. not through any tax breaks or anything like that. but through getting back to work a
